Description

The Shaka is a portable 1-meter flying wing slope glider/sport electric model that gives endless joy on a slope or a flat field. The Shaka RC glider kit features a classic balsa/plywood construction, reinforced with carbon fiber spars and a leading edge. The kit can be built in approx. 6-10 hours as either an electric-powered or a pure glider with no major difference in the weight. Check the assembly guide to learn how to build this kit.

Shaka is collapsible for transportation and storage. Simply unscrew 2 bolts and take the fuselage and both wings apart. It’s as easy as that. The fuselage has a hatch for easy access to the interior and electronics. 2 servos, there is a room for almost any 5 -10g servos which are glued onto the dedicated plates in the wing and drive the two elevons. You can easily install a suitable 14XX or 15XX drone motor to make your Shaka powered for flat-field fun or emergency rescues on the slope. The fuse is designed to fit both 30mm and 25mm spinners for your convenience.

This kit includes laser cut balsa and plywood, carbon spars, an excellent coloured full size plan and comes with a complete accessory set. This includes M4 plastic wing mounting bolts and a pair of M4 nuts to be glued into the fuselage during assembly, control horns, ball linkages, and servo horn clevises for pushrods, etc. Covering film is not included in the kit, we recommend Oracover or Oralight.

For more build and setup tips please check the Shaka thread on RC Groups.

Great kit and flyer, but plans are a bit off

I really enjoyed building this kit, and it flies very well, but on my plans the wings are a bit too short (or the trailing edge piece is too long). Only issue it caused for me was that I cut one wing spar a little short.I also love how it breaks down and that the wings split in half.

Problem with wood and laser cutting

Two of the balsa sheets in the kit have a band of very hard wood running along their length. Where the parts coincide with these bands the laser cutting does not go all the way through the wood. This requires laborious manual cutting by scalpel to work around.

If the manufacturer had turned over the sheet after lasering they would have seen there was no cut line on the back of some parts. Just holding the sheet you can feel the ridge of hard wood. The kit does come with a plan but just that, a plan view only of the wing. No outline of ribs from which to make your own in case of trouble with the kit.

The Shaka design requires laser cutting so demands uniform wood. Small radius curves, such as to fit carbon fibre into the leading edge, are not suitable for hand cutting. I am aware of problems with balsa supply in recent years but think this should have made the manufacturer alert to the problem. I have no complaint about Hyperflight, wood selection is not visible until you unpack the parts.

Great little glider, very portable

The Shaka is a great little glider. Straightforward and quick build and flies great. Here's mine on it's first outing: https://youtu.be/CtRdtlB3GZ0

Shaka glider kit review

Haven't yet made the kit, quality of the plywood and balsa laser cutting and wood is very nice and plans well printed. However the carbon tubes for the main wing spar is of very poor quality, the wall thickness changes from 0.8mm on one side to 1.5mm on the opposite side of the tube. I guess I will have to change these at my expense. Note the rear spar carbon tube is perfectly round with a 1.00mm wall thickness.
There is also good information about making the kit online. Delivery was very quick.
