Description

The Hawk 2 RTF is a great 1m mini DLG from Ukraine that is built beautifully and flies excellently. This version comes with servos installed. The Hawk 1m DLG launches high and has a good speed range. The Hawk 2 is an upgrade of the original Hawk 1m DLG that has well earned reputation for launching high and having a good speed range while also being easy to fly. The Hawk 2 is very similar to the previous model but has a slightly wider fuselage with a slip-on nosecone for easier RC installation and maintenance.

These RTF Hawks 2 are almost ready to fly, with just the receiver and battery needing to be supplied by the buyer. These models have either Hitec HS-40 or KST X06N servos fitted. All linkages and control horns have beautifully installed. Also the throwing blade has been expertly fitted to the left wing, making these models suitable for right-handed throwers (though a left-handed launcher could fit a throwing blade to the right wing also).

The glass Hawk 2 DLG model is supplied with a strong and brightly coloured glass layup wing, which weighs approx 60 g. The SC Hawk 2 version is supplied with a lighter Carboline spread carbon wing weighing 52 g. The SC model especially is exceptionally light, while also being strong and very rigid, allowing high launches. Still air times of 1:30 to 2 minutes can be obtained by strong launchers, and thermal performance and stability is good.

The SC Hawk's 2 fuselage is a one piece (not pod and boom) design of oval cross section, with the front part made from 2.4GHz friendly glass, and the rear from spread carbon. The glass Hawk 2 version's fuselage is all glass construction. The fuselage has a slip-on nosecone that gives good access to the RC, for easier installation and maintenance. All the servos are installed in the pod to minimise nose weight and yaw inertia. The Hawk 2's fuselage is a bit wider that the original version's however the RC installation is still a fairly cramped. As the only instructions available are various online build logs the model is not ideal for inexperienced builders.

The tailplane (horizontal stabiliser) is bolted onto a small pylon molded into the underside of the boom, and the fin (vertical stabiliser) has a perfectly matching hole molded into it, enabling easy mounting onto the end of the tailboom.

The Hawk 2 wing is solid molded with a glass or spread carbon skin over a CNC cut foam core. The wing has a good surface finish ensuring low drag and longevity. The ailerons are fabricated with a living hinge. The only work required to finish the wings is installing the throwing blade and control horns.

We recommend that the sewn wing and tail bags are also purchased. These will help avoid transport and storage damage, keeping the glider in top condition.

Note the aileron pushrods initially look to be too short, but are correct. The flaperons need more down movement than up movement so the pushrods are set to flaperon midpoint (half way between max down and max up) at the servo midpoint. You will need to use your transmitter programming facilities to centre the flaperons with the flaps up, and at cruise camber. Then set up mixes to give you landing flaps and wing camber adjustment. If you have any questions please ask on the RCGroups Hawk 1m DLG from HyperFlight thread. Also see this thread for build info.

See the options below the price to see the colours and layup of the models currently in stock. All models are for right-handed launchers unless described Left Handed.

Beautifully finished ARTF.

I already have a Hawk SC Layup that I got in kit form from Hyperflight, and that was a great, if not challenging from a space point of view, DLG kit to learn on.

I’d seen these ARTF versions in stock before, so went for a Glass Layup version as a nice backup to my carbon Hawk and maybe something for slightly windier days.

It’s beautifully finished, as per my review title, all servos setup correctly, pushrods the perfect length, throwing blade installed with no excess epoxy and control horns straight and true. It’s certainly showed me where I could have done better with my build!

It took me longer to install the Rx (a FrSky GXR6 Vario in my case) and programme the radio than it did to assemble it.

I do think the servo stack could be slightly further forward than it is on my model, it leaves enough room for either the Rx or a small battery in the nose, but not both, so you end up fitting something rear of the servos as a result. I’ve got the 1s 600mAh battery rear of the servos, wouldn’t fit up front, although still forward of the CofG, and the Rx and lead weight in the nose. All up flying weight on mine in that configuration is 155g. I could have gone for a smaller battery, but think the lead weight required in the nose would have been higher, so turned it into extra battery instead.

As a comparison, my SC Hawk with an RX4 Rx is 118g all up, still with a few grams of lead in the nose.

It was a slightly windier day than ideal for a maiden today, but I have to say it flew beautifully with the CofG at 55mm, and I was getting 35m launches with very little effort with the controls setup as per the guide above.

The HiTec servos in my version all work very well, and return to centre as you’d expect, so overall very pleased and would heartily recommend these ARTF versions, great fun to fly.

Beautiful DLG

Wow, ordered on the weekend and arrived the following Thursday in Central Queensland, Australia. Model was well packaged and arrived in perfect condition. A beautifully made model that I am really looking forward to flying. Many thanks to Neil at Hyperflight.

just perfect

Small, light, easy to set up, and flies well.

_Really_ ready to fly, I couldn't come close!

Been away from flying for a while, and wouldn't have known how to finish this feather-light mini-dlg. If I had, maybe I would have moved the servos half a centimetre for my gear, but hadn't heard of KST, ever seen a spring-pull tail surface, or the mounting details. My last model was a Pike F3J.

Hawk 2

This is a great little DLG, it will launch 25-30m with just a 180 degree flick of the arm and once airborne it telegraphs turbulent or rising air well. I've had 10 minute flights in light, early spring thermals. In light winds it's very benign and can be easily slowed down making it a relaxing experience all round. I tend to avoid moderate winds as things happen a bit too quickly for my skill level with this little plane. Having all the servos & control lines/rods fitted saves a tone of head scratching as well as time. A big thumbs up from me.

Awesome DLG!

Thanks Neil for the speedy service. Received safely in a beautifully packaged box in AUSTRALIA after 3 days expedited shipping means. Amazing finish, purchased RTF with KST 06 servos. Had to adjust the LH servo horn mechanically however everything else was perfect! Spektrum 6ch rx (case off) and Dualsky 1s300 lipo in the nose got the cofg perfect. I set it up on a IX14 radio, with loosely following setting recommendations via your page. Needed some up elevator trim for the programmed launch setting, and down elevator for spoiler setting. All sorted with ease inside the flight mode setups. Specked it out on the 8th launch once setup was feeling perfect. A great DLG, I highly recommend this glider and purchasing from Hyperflight!

Hawk

Had a new RTF Hawk sitting in the box for a couple of years and decided to set it up and give it a shot...It had the BB101 servos in there and they would not center properly...After one flight I shelved it and ordered 4 KST 06 servos for it...I yanked the 101's out with pliers and held them till they were over the trash can and dropped them in....I cut some of the pushrod and string tubing away, installed the KST's, and now I have a nifty flying Hawk!!

Lovely DLG

I bought mine a couple of years ago, and even though a beautiful glider, I was unlucky to buy mine with the terrible Blue Bird servos installed. With lots of effort to rectify friction in the aileron push rods which made centering worse, it was very strange to fly, when the servos wouldn't centre properly, which in the end I experienced a stall and dive to the ground. The fuselage snapped in half. Very disappointing as the whole point of the RTF is that it should fly correctly out of the box. Those who buy one now are lucky because you'll have the KSTs installed. So my route into the full carbon 1m DLG experience is a very expensive and disappointing one.

Hawk 1m DLG RTF

A beautiful little plane. Ordered Monday, arrived safely Wednesday and finished today. Struggled to get the MPX RX 5 slim in as rudder servo was restricting space. Discussion with Neil suggested that I'd probably be o.k sans rudder, so out came the rudder servo. Perfect fit now for battery, the three remaining servos and the Rx. Needed 10 Gms of ballast to balance at 55 mm behind L/E. Very thin strip of carbon fixed into rudder hinge slot prevents rudder movement, after removal of torsion spring. Looks so smart, can't wait to get it flown. Looking at Neil's front page support banner for Ukraine makes me so sad, all this lovely engineering comes from the various cottage industry there. I have lots of Ukrainian friends built of over many years of free flight modelling adventures. I will leave you with tonight's response from friend Vasyl in besieged Kharkov " Dear Gary. Yes, we're alive. We are scared but brave. Still on line to talk to the world. For now anyway". Pray for them all, please.

Gary M.

Nice, but...

Nicely built dlg, goes together well. Needed 20g of lead in nose to balance, servos could have been installed further forward to help this so not great and aileron servos don't centre very well as tubes seem sticky.

Flys well, but, would be better without the extra nose weight.

Hawk DLG build

As the other reviews state, the packaging and shipping are second to none. The servos are installed and placed properly. Linkages are all set up except for the rudder and it's 90% there. One thing is a bit tricky, the loop on the elevator pull wire is inside the opening of the fuse. Without being told this it appears you need to pull the servo and set up it up again.. DON"T DO THAT! I almost did until Neil set me straight. (very patient guy by the way) pull it out with a little hook or something and you will understand. Over all the pre build on this is very good.
It is a DLG and the fuse is very small. Be mindful ordering batteries and use a micro receiver. I had to add alot of weight, 10gr, to get it to balance.

Overall the build quality is A1,. hard to wrong with this DLG

Great Product

I am based in Southern California and I ordered this DLG as soon as it came back in. Glider arrived very quickly and extremely well packed with no damage. Installation of servos and control lines was really helpful as this has such a tiny space for all the electronics. Highly recommend this supplier they are great to work with and very careful in ensuring the safety of their products during shipping. Haven't flown it yet but hopefully this weekend!

Hawk RTF DLG

Excellent packaging and delivery. On assembly slight niggle with ailerons not centering. Modify pushrod for better alignment. Very nice DLG, superb flyer.

First encounter with a 'proper' DLG. Was attracted to the Hawk because it was complete, no building required. This was a great way for me to see how it was to be done, without the worry of having to improvise with a kit, now there is a great reference to see how best practice looks, much more confident in purchasing a kit now.
The Hawk is beautiful finished, everything wanted. A great size for keeping in the van, wonderful fit and finish. Graphics are great and very helpful as the underside flashes are very different to the upper surface design, orientation will be much improved over the plain all over colours I'm used to. As a relative newcomer to DLG, the overall experience is of a plane that will be a cherished. Not had a flight yet, waiting for conditions to be better for initial set up, confidence is high.

Neil is a cracking chap and a joy to ask questions to, none of the monosyllabic yes or no answers many of us have become accustomed to. A passionate and knowledgable man who clearly has probably forgotten more that I know. It's a comfort to purchase from a person who has such knowledge and passion for his products. Never once felt like a pest for asking questions and feel confident I could ring and ask anytime and he would very likely be interested and motivated to put me on he right track. Highly recommended, wonderful plane and a special buying experience that will lead to a long time association for sure. Thank you Hyperflight.

Carbon RTF Hawk

Bought another carbon RTF Hawk as a back-up ship....Arrived well boxed and undamaged, as expected from Neil...Red on carbon, on top of wing...Bright green stripes underneath....All set up now ready for service when called upon!!!

Two glass Hawks!!!

Flight report on our two glass Hawks.....CG 55mm...They seem to fly just as well as the carbon jobs, although the carbon ship hangs a little better in the heat above the grass...This next week I'm gonna fly it along the small sand berm on the beach in Huntington Beach, CA...Should be good!!!

Two glass Hawk RTF's

Our two glass Hawk RTF's were shipped from England on a Thursday and arrived in our grubby hands in the USA mid-day the following Monday, boxed beautifully and in excellent shape...The SD100 servos in these are larger than the BB101's in our carbon jobs, so the AR 410 receivers have been de-pinned and servo lines soldered directly to the board...That big goofy capacitor was taken off the receiver board and epoxied behind the servos, under the wing area, with a couple of lines running to it...The receiver board fits nicely on top of the front servos with the battery in front of that, in the nose, and the balance is spot on!!...Waiting for better weather here to have a fling!!...Thanks again Neil

Nice model, bad shipping

The build quality of the model was great. Unfortunately, when my Hawk arrived the package had been smashed and the fuselage was broken and the wing was dented by the same event. I was able to repair the fuse and Neil offered to give me a partial refund. His customer service and support after shipment was great despite the challenging situation.

Two Hawk SC RTF's!!

Ordered two carbon Hawk RTF ships....Got here to the USA in under a week and boxed nice...no damage...Came with the HyperFlight 150mah NiMH battery which fit nicely in the nose...We (My girlfriend and I) are using Spektrum AR410 antenna-less receivers with the covers off, which fit nicely behind the servos and halfway under the leading edge of the wing...balanced nicely at 55mm from leading edge without any additional weight...These things are perfect for the small parks and schoolyards we have around here and they thermal very well, especially the low level heat coming off the grass!!...I ordered two more RTF ships, glass ones this time, to fly the beach and small slopes and cliffs along the shoreline, as well as our local RC field where there isn't any grass, so as not to scratch or ding up the beautiful carbon jobs, which are "Grass only" flyers!!....These things are a blast, we are having too much fun!!!....Thanks Neil
