Description

The Vortex 3 DLG is a superb top level DLG for people who enjoy the best. It has excellent performance but also great handling characteristics that endear it to sports and competition pilots world wide.

The build quality is first rate and the engineering is very impressive. Apart from of course perfectly molded carbon parts the kit comes with a very nicely engineered system for automatic connection of the aileron controls when the wing is attached. This is a different level of convenience and functionality to any other DLG we sell.

Supplied with a complete accessory bag including all the items necessary to complete the model. Two servo trays are included, for KST X08 and MKS DS65K servos.

The MKS servo tray cutout is 22mm x 17mm, making it suitable for 4 DS65K servos. To fit 4 DS75K servos in the MKS tray 0.5 mm needs to be trimmed from each edge of both cutouts.

The KST servo tray cutout is 23.5mm x 16mm, making it suitable for 4 X08 servos or A08 servos. The cutouts are too large for the X06.

Note, the top mounting surface on both trays is flat, so servo installation may require thin spacers to raise the 2 front servos so that the tail strings clear the aileron pushrods.

Lots more info in this RCGroups Vortex 3 thread and this Vortex official build thread. We are stocking the two piece wing version (2pw) with a bottom mounted tailplane, in various layups.

Great service & fast shipping

The quality of the Vortex 3 is top notch! It flies so well and thermals like a dream. My all up weight is 246 grams with a 850 milliamp battery in the nose to balance it. I ended up putting the tray further back in the fuselage and I think that's why I needed the extra weight. Either way it flies amazing at that weight and I get over 2 hours of flight time.
Service was great as usual, they are always responsive to my questions and shipping is super fast.
This is the third glider I bought here and I will be by my next one from here too.

Nice DLG, don't like auto-connect ailerons.

I just finished building the Vortex 3, I haven't flow it yet. Good build videos on the Vortex site really help with the build. The auto-connect ailerons are a devil to set up. Even after everything is in place it is difficult to get the aileron linkage to line up when putting on the wing, I don't want to remove the wing because it. I like the pull-strings being guided through teflon tubes in the front half of the fuse. I take two stars away from the overall rating because of the aileron connection, otherwise it's a 5 star kit.

First full-size dlg

This is a step-up from mini dart 2 and it really does fly much better. I can cover more area in cruise, do more stable rudder turns (higher dihedral), and lose less altitudes in stalls.

I built it with kst a08 servos, pulley arms, and radio master receiver on 2s 300mah battery. AUW 240g - heavier than I thought but not a deal breaker. I was very nervous about the build as I had to sand the servo tray (the servo tray should sit in the recess area in the fuselage), sand the aileron link arms, and eventually cut the aileron link arms to clear the servo body (which I did not know so I had to undo some CA glues using not-so-ideal force). The provided Kevlar should be used to increase the contact area of the launch peg. I used it for something else so I used kite strings instead - CA-ed first then soaked by epoxy. Still I am nervous about the tail fin, since I don’t know where I can find replacement parts.

Flying wise, this plane is great. I could have 10 minute flights on any calm day on a big enough field. (California sunshine.) The limiting factors are really my neck and the direction of the sun. In fact, I find more enjoyments just fooling around at low altitudes. I often run into thermals at 10-meter height and climb up to 20-30 meters for another cruise.

The plane itself is very stiff. I had a nose down crash due to radio failure and I did not set failsafe. (The receiver was from a different brand and the real question is when rather than if the radio will fail.) Thankfully the grass was soft and I only had some cracks in the wing roots. I could fix them using carbon repair kit and 3d-printed synergy molds. My tail fin is starting to wobble and I am extending its life with carbon tow reinforcements. Fingers crossed.

Gorgeous model

WOW, this is one amazing model. As usual, packed extremely well by Hyperflight, in a very sturdy reinforced box, arrived in perfect condition. Ordered with 4 KST A08's and pulley servo arms that were securely taped in the box to avoid any chance of them traveling around.
Looking over the model, ....... it is a piece of art. Simply gorgeous. Parts fit perfectly, and left me thinking things like "WOW how did they mold that so perfectly, ie. the 2 part wing connection". The automated aileron connection is a thing of genius.
With the help from Roy Dor's youtube channel (been busy watching) assembling this model should take no time at all and should be ready for the Australian summer in a few months, though spring time now is proving some great thermals already so I better get building ..... ;-)

Exceptional

Gorgeous DLG, superb build quality and hardwares. Construction is straight forward with all the online resources available.
I have several DLGs and this is my favorite. It's so floaty, retains it's energy in my sloppy turns without loosing altitude. Love this plane!

well worth the wait

having had several DLG models from Hyperflight in the past, I decided to order a Vortex 3 from Neil last September, it arrived the week before Xmas, packaged as always in a really strong box . I wasnt disappointed , super fit & finish all the necessary parts included, Using KST08 servos the build was easy because everything is on top & there is loads of room in the nose, the only criticism I would make is ,the horrid printed plastic servo trays in the kit , they are hard to trim & very brittle, ply would be better & easier to work. all built up with a2s 300 lipo connected to a micro pico switch & 5v ubec & rx all easily fitted in the nose, CG came out at 64 mm back, all up weight of 220 gr, build was made easy by watching Roy Dors excellent vids on youtube. test flew new years day, bit windy ,but all was well, needed 30gr ballast to get enough energy into the model to fly well. . it seems to me that 220gr is too light for all but dead calm days, flys best at around 235 -245 gr .I did purchase the Vortex ballast & wing bags at the same time ,worth doing I believe, quite expensive overall but an excellent very strong glider made to a very high standard , thanks again to Neil at Hyperflight for a first class service.
