Description

The Blaster 3 has great performance and is suitable for new and more experienced fliers of discus launched gliders. The third of the award winning Blaster line of 1.5m DLGs from Vladimir's Models, the Blaster 3 launches higher than the Blaster 2, while keeping its ARTF quick construction, and great handling. Although not the current pinnacle of DLG performance, it offers unsurpassed quality of construction and value for money. It is in common use as a competition level discus launch glider, while also being suitable for intermediate and even less experienced pilots. Thanks to the advanced aerodynamic design by Dr. Drela, the Blaster 3 has a great combination of being easy to fly with excellent low speed controllability, while having a good glide angle at higher speeds, allowing it to penetrate back upwind after catching a thermal.

The Blaster 3 is only produced in spread carbon wing layups only, this makes the model much tougher than the earlier glass versions, without being heavier. The "Regular" layup is suitable for average launchers in all wind conditions, or powerful launchers in winds up to about 14 mph (22kph). The slightly heavier "Strong" layup is even stronger and is suitable for all strengths of launchers in all wind conditions. Both versions are stiffer than the previous glass layup, allowing the model to be launched higher, and their strong carbon wing skin ensures they suffer less damage from handling, transport, or missed catches.

Blaster 3 is designed in CAD from the ground up. It combines unique design, the latest composite materials, the state of the art manufacturing process and careful manual composite layup. Blaster 3's visible simplicity hides its structural sophistication.

The Blaster 3 has these major improvements over the Blaster 2:
  • Lighter, from 260 g flying weight, approx 40 g lighter than the Blaster 2.
  • Easier and quicker to build.
  • Smaller fuselage with smaller pylon reduces drag.
  • Shorter tailboom and smaller tailplane reduces inertia and improves manoeuvrability.
  • Stiffer wing mount and tail boom increases the launch height.
  • The above result in a model that launches higher, has improved hang time, and thermals better.

The Blaster 3 can have the launch blade attached to either wing, allowing the model to be built for left handed and right handed throwers.

The wing design uses state of the art hollow molded fabrication techniques to maximise strength, while keeping weight to a minimum.

The spar is constructed from high modulus unidirectional carbon flanges, which are bonded to the wing skin, these are kept rigid by the web, which is made from high density blue foam strengthened with a braided carbon fibre sleeve. This ensures +/- 45 degree fibre orientation, ideal for a shear web. Blaster spar construction

The wing skins are made of Rohacell foam and glass cloth. The ailerons are very light and stiff due to a braided CF sleeve spar. This also moves the aileron CG forward, preventing flutter during launch. Blaster aileron construction

Great DLG

Great DLG, the main feature of this glider that attracted me was the access to the servos and the battery (canopy design). The build quality is excellent, its a beautiful glider and the service from hyperflight is always fantastic. The model builds very easily and makes for an incredibly floaty glider which weight can easily be added to. Having all four servos up front helps in keeping the weight down, I currently have four Ripmax SD100 servos running off a 350mah 2cell which lasts for at least two hours of flight time. Would recommend this model for a strong intermediate to advance RC pilot. Easy flying but although very strong for a full force launch it might not fare too well after a few heavy landings.

Blaster 3 DLG

Read the instructions through a couple of times before starting and assembly was very straightforward. Everything fits together well and I experienced no major problems. Followed the instruction images for the radio/servo installation and dry fit everything first. Minimal nose weight needed to achieve correct CG.

Purchased this as I wanted a step up in performance from my Elf and was not disappointed. The Blaster is very easy and forgiving to fly and even with my sloppy launches I'm managing to get decent flight times.

Very happy with my Blaster 3 and the excellent service from Hyperflight.

The kit arrived at my door step after only a few days. Very well packed and protected in a huge sturdy cardboard box.
It's my first DLG, and also my first build of this kind, so I took my time and built/assembled the Blaster carefully and slowly over a couple of evenings, after having read through the Blaster3 build thread over at rcgroups.com.
It went together easily and as planned. Very impressed with the precision and build quality of this glider! Mr Vladimir sure seems to know what he's doing! Very light and at the same time stiff and strong.
KSTX08's for flaperons and Ripmax SD100's for the tail feathers. Fit easily inside the nose cone with unregulated 2s400mAh lipo. CoG at 85 mm without ballast, total weight 256g.
I set it up according to the manual with 4 flight modes.
Maidened it today, with no drama whatsoever. First a couple of light tosses, and then I tried some discus launches. The Blaster is a very docile and gentle flier, but at the same time highly maneuvrable! Caught a thermal on my 7th (or so) launch, what a Blast (pun intended) :-) :-)

Received dlg in good time very well packaged however was not checked properly? as the wing had a tiny knock on the trailing edge I chose to repair it rather than have the hassle of sending it back.
Although i have experience with gliders this is my first proper dlg after an elf, nice quality kit.
All goes together well i used four kst x08n servos and a JR rg612bx receiver very snug fit plus a 2s turnigy nano-tech 300mah lipo no regulator needed with this setup.
balanced spot on at 82mm and 261g no ballast needed Looking forward to flying it.

Blaster 3 spread carbon

A jewel of a machine,very easy to build and fly. Me second DLG after a super mini topsky ( which is great) and worth every penny.
I used Mks 6100 on the ailerons and KST x08' on the tail surfaces.
I chose to run the .8mm carbon push rod to the all moving stab inside the boom and a pull/ spring actuation,like wise through the boom, for the rudder. Very easy, looks so much better and nothing can catch.

A highly recomended aircraft! Of course hyperflights usual exemplary service.

Fabulous

Finally got around to finishing my Blaster 3 and Test flew it today. Wow, what a fantastic bit of kit Flew straight off the board with stock settings and handled the breeze well even without ballast. This is my second DLG and the first reasonable sized one. As a follow-on from my ELF it was an easy step-up, and I'm looking forward to more time with it. Roll on Summer.

Brilliant!

No hassle with assembly. Try to plan the equipment layout ahead and make sure you're battery fits well in the nosecone (unlike mine...), easy to set up with the given templates and broad range of photos. Top quality moulding, lightweight, neat and strong. Good quality paint easily seen from distance. Fitted mine with Ripmax/Dymond servos 2x D47 for tail and 2x SD150 for ailerons, powered by 2s 360mAh lipo.
It 'sticks' to the air, good flight performance even in bad thermal conditions. You might want to fine tune the aileron settings for flight phases, dependant on your CG, but generally it's perfect to fly on stock settings.

The quality of this kit is superb, possibly the best I have ever come across, and it takes very little time to get it ready for flight. However, the instructions make no reference to setting the datum point of the all moving tail, which is very important for the first flight. A quick phone call to Neil provided the answer which was to set it parallel to the boom and trim if necessary during the first flight. Apart from that the installation is easy with all of the supplied accessories fit for purpose.
One point to note is that if using 4 servos (I used SD 100's) a very small battery is required up front to fit inside the very slim nose cone. I ended up using a 2s 200mAh LiPo as nothing else I could source would fit without fouling the top of the nose cone when it was pushed fully home.
To sum up, it's a quality model that won't disappoint!

Lovely model

I've never had something so well packaged !!
And delivery was very quick.
As for the model, well what great quality and craftsmanship. This is my first proper dlg and I've not finished putting it together yet so I can't say how it flies.
For me the instructions regarding the push rods could be a bit clearer I'm used to ball links on RC Helicopters but I'll get by. I had intended to use stainless steel wire and PTFE tube and would like to see a how to on this site on how to do that and I couldn't get the PTFE to stick to a test piece of carbon, but these points are my short comings and not Hyper Flights or the models.
I'll come back with an update as I get some flying done.

The windy wing is the best finishing job.

I think this wing has the best finish of any DLG . The perfectly finished surface is very beautiful and very very stiff.

I appreciate HyperFlight's support in replacing the wing which was damaged in shipping to Japan. HyperFlight did a good job when handling this matter. Thanks a lot Neil.

This model is so beautiful, so well made it was a nervous and very careful build. (Very easy though). So much so I hesitated to use it in autumn wet weather soon after I finished it (and thought of selling while still pristine to buy a cheaper chucker). However have now flown it twice and it is absolutely brilliant. Imagine the benign Elf (which I also have), carry over the float and friendly characteristics and multiply by 2.5.
There you have the experience of flying this performance machine.
Build quality and aerodynamics of an inverted Adrian Newey F1 car.
Fitted up with Smart Lipo 650 and Hyperion metal gear digital servos all from Hyperflight. I got so carried away I ignored the battery warning double beep. Believe it or not it floated down level from 30m, to a safe, horizontal, gentle, slow landing with no Rx/Tx control!! What more can I say about the balance? CG spot on with 4 servos in the pod and no ballast.
Thankyou Neil for making these Ukrainian masterpieces so accessible in the UK.
