Description

The Mad-RES is a second generation F3-RES design. As a further development of the RES-ONE it is one of the lightest and quickest to build F3-RES models available. The wing is a solid CNC cut molding from ultra lightweight hand picked solid balsa resulting in a very accurate ultra-thin profile with no covering sag. The wing structure including the carbon spar can be assembled in approx 1.5 hrs with practice! The wing breaks down into three pieces for travelling and storage, the flat centre panel and two tip panels. The tailplane can be easily removed, making this model convenient to transport.

MadRES wing section

The GT Synergy Modified airfoil profiles make the best of the ultra thin wing giving a very good glide angle and a wider speed range. Due to the wing design and low weight the MadRES excels at finding lift and climbing out in weak thermals.

The design and material selection was deliberately designed for extremely light weight, allowing the prototype to be built to the sensational mass of 278 g. The production models were redesigned to be a little stronger and better able to withstand the rough and tumble of competition flying and weight around 320 g to 360 g ready to fly. The model can also be built as an electric glider with a flying weight of 370 g to 420 g, using a slim motor like a geared Hacker A10-7L.

MADres build

Finnish on the main wing was not as good as I thought it would be, very 'open grained' and could not be sanded out without changing the profile of the air foil. The tail boom alignment jig had a hole that was much too small to get over the boom - would have been easier to make form scratch if given the dimensions. The 'mid' wing sections when held up back to back were ~6mm different outside profile. I lined up the spar pockets and sanded the larger one down to match the smaller one. The rest of the build went fine.
First hand tosses and light HiStart flights went very well, with very little trim needed to get nice low sink glides. This is a wing that wants to move through the air to work so I ended up thinking of it like my Snipe2 - not a floater but even with launches in the 100ft(30m) range on a cool day got a couple of 2min flights.
I would buy another - I just thought the milled wing parts would be better than they were.

Like many others, I was attracted by the very thin solid balsa wing and found the MadRES a straightforward and satisfying build. The quality and fit of all the parts was generally excellent.

I decided to build the wing as one piece rather than having detachable tips, and I reinforced all the joins with strips of thin carbon cloth. Apart from the tail feathers, which I covered in transparent Oracover, I went for a completely natural finish and gave the wings and fuselage two thin coats of Epifanes clear high gloss varnish. The model is waterproof and looks good.

First flight off the hi-start was made in worryingly gusty conditions. My head said don't do it, my heart said go on, so I did. I was surprised and pleased with how it handled this far-from-ideal weather, the rudder response being instant. However, the rudder fluttered like a flag in a gale during the launch, and I wondered whether a larger control horn would work better with the pull-spring system, as the ones with the kit are very small. As I had a spare Snipe elevator horn, I fitted that instead. I would recommend considering a larger rudder horn on the MadRES, as it not only eliminated the flutter but gave a smoother response.

Subsequent flights have shown this glider to be a great performer, capable of very tight circling in a thermal and responding instantly to the slightest bit of lift. It also has a good turn of speed when needed and the spoiler is effective. Very satisfying. Love it!

Hi Neil, Thank you for sending me this glider so promptly.I have not built it yet but the package arrived in Australia in a little over a week in a well packaged box with no damage at all.I have had a number of purchases sent from your business and they always arrive similarly.This plane will be used in a 2 mtr rudder elev. ALES comp. using electric 180 watt power so will need to be mod. for this purpose.It would be good to see alist of good quality elec. gliders that would fit this class.I will post a flight report when the time comes. Build and fly with a twist

With a 'twist' . . . ? That super thin wing section was the clincher for me. We had been discussing such things in the club recently. I built MadRES as an electric powered 2m model. The kit is well presented, with impresive wood selection and nice CNC machining of the wing, equaly good was the laser cutting of other balsa parts. Perhaps the CNC cutting of plywood parts could be cleaner, even so every thing fitted well.

I had to re-design the pod a little to accomodate the Hacker 10aGB, not a major job but without some thought (a lot of thought) it could go wrong. The noise lost about 50mm and gained about 2 degresss of down thrust, it all fitted in nicley, shaping down to a slim 29mm spinner.

The rear of the pod was made wider so that I could drop in the rudder and elevator servos one each side of the boom. A tight squeez even with the smallest Blue Bird servo, I also faired the rear of the pod into the boom. Putting the servos in the space between the last two formers is not a mod I would advise, as some carfully implimented strengthening has to be done without adding weight. However it does aleviate to some degree the quart in a pint pot syndrome created by adding a power train.

The final mod was to dump the 'pull spring' operation of rudder/elevator, replacing it with 1.3mm carbon rod running down the top of the boom in PTFE tubes, Sapphire fashon.

Building was streight forwad enough, although if I ever built another I would increas the pod depth and width by a milimeter or three..

So to flying, I have been waiting for good weather for a few weeks, today was perfect. She flew streight and true from the launch. A few adjustments to CG and control throws had MadRES filling me with confidence.

A third flight, can she realy do it? Climbed to about 100m motor off, she held her own with the 4m model being flown at the time, I think it was a Stork? That landed, I shaped up to do the same . . . 10-20m on circuit, the nose lifted, turn into it, lift, I keep circling eventualy back up to near launch height. MadRES followed the thermal without me doing much encouraging, very satifying for the last flight of the day.

A few missgiving when I first look at the kit, One has to say, in the end, not a problem.

It would be nice to build a second one as 'e-Madres'. Incorporating the changes to the pod to make build a little more tailored to the requirements of an electric powered model. All up weight came out at 420grs, not to shaby considering the extra weight of the power train.

If 2m is your bag, MadRES is good value for money, different with lots of potential, within what I suspect is a good flight envelope..

A little more wind tomorrow, see how she handles 10mph?

Excellent RES Model

This model is very nice. I'm already looking to get a second one!

The CNC surfaces are very clean and require very little sanding to get them to a point where they're ready to cover. I felt that the balsa was of good quality and appeared to be well cut. All of the components which come with the kit are of good quality. Being a RES plane there is very little in the way of these components, but what is needed is in the bag.

There are a couple of minuses. I felt that the lightening of the tail group does cause some structural issues. They become very fragile. I've enhanced mine with .8mm carbon rod along the leading edges but still worry about them on a bad landing.

Overall, I wouldn't hesitate to recommend this kit to anyone. It builds extremely easily. If you sat down with a dedicated weekend you could probably almost finish it.

Oh, and Hyperflight sent this packed very nicely all the way to Florida, USA. It arrived very quickly with no issues!

Very nice kit!

The MadRES is a very high quality kit which was quick to build. The English build instructions were helpful, but incomplete, however, there are several helpful build logs on RCGroups if needed. The kit was well packaged and arrived to the USA in excellent condition. Thank you Hyperflight for the great service.
