Description

The AndREaS Elektro RES is a built-up laser cut balsa and ply electric 2m eSoarer. It is based on the AndREaS which is designed for the new F3-RES high-start launched Rudder-Elevator-Spoiler class now popular in Germany and Austria.

The hand selected wood in the Andreas Elektro kit is beautifully laser cut and is a pleasure to work with. The precut parts extend to the spar, leading edge and D-Box, making assembly quick and straight forward, with a minimum of sanding required. The 8.5% thick airfoil has been specially developed for the F3-RES class to give good thermal ability and a good turn of speed. With a flying weight of approx 550 g (19 oz) the wing loading can be as low as 16 g/dm2 (5 oz/sq ft). Despite the low loading the thin wing profile gives the Andreas excellent penetration, allowing it to be used in even at higher wind speeds.

The kit includes all pushrods, all small parts, a colour full size plan and richly coloured, illustrated, building instructions. The English translation is here.

Not included in the kit are adhesives, or RC components. For covering the kit Oralight is highly recommended.

  • Laser cut all-wood construction with self jigging weight-optimized parts.
  • Removable pylon mounted tailplane set in front of the fin.
  • Huge rudder for agile control behaviour.
  • Two-piece wing with multiple panel breaks and contoured wingtips
  • D-Box leading edge for maximum laminar flow over the wing.
  • Sophisticated self-jigging spar for a strong easy to construct wing.
  • Powerful spoilers give an excellent braking effect and accurate landings.
  • Colour plan and extensively illustrated, with detailed building instructions (in German).

Having returned to the hobby after a long layoff, and have been used to building from plans and the occasional kit, l started to look around for a electric powered glider to build, after reading a selection of reviews this was the glider for me, having used Hyperflight previously a order was placed, and as usual the service and delivery was first class, having only constructed about half of the model (a very large parts count) the quality of the kit was excellent, dispite a number of reviews saying other wise, looking forward to getting it completed and up in the air.

Re Andreas:

I have built fuse & tail feathers. & 1 wing panel.
Most of my building in the past has been scratch building from plans- very time consuming.
The Andreas kit is a pleasure to build. The laser cutting & the interlocking parts make the process so easy.
In contrast to another reviewer's experience my kit is very accurately cut & parts do match the plans.

I am wary re fitting magnets to both fuse & inner wing panels. The magnets are super strong & separating wings and fuse may be difficult without damaging wing.
Maybe thin steel discs in wing panels will be quite adequate.

I am making this model for a flying class in NSW , Australia- which allows only 2 control functions.

So - I will not be fitting the spoilers.

Span is limited to 2 m. & motor output to 180 W ( matches a Radian).

Some Question

Question
Most of them were satisfactory, but there are some questions.
Res fuselage and tail wings were manuals, but wings do not have manuals. Was it originally? There is also one iron rod for connecting the fuselage with two holes. Was it originally?

Ok. Here is my 100% completely biased opinion.
I was fitting my servos when you sent this, so I had some time to think about it.

The kit was fun to build. The instructions are fantastic as far as illustrations go. WIth a little (ok a lot) of help from Google Translate on my phone, I was able to figure out what to do with minimal head scratching. For me, the parts count was way too high. There was some beautiful engineering that went into this kit, but could have been simplified. As it was stated in the thread on RCGroups, each spoiler is 8 parts alone. The rudder and vertical? 17.

Next part. The wing is a fun portion, but do not expect it to line up to the plans. I am not sure if the paper stretched or what, but most of the wing did not line up for anything with the plan. I used it as a rough guide and let the parts jig themselves where they needed to go. For the most part, this was a good thing. If something didn't fit, it was in the wrong spot. The spar is another story. It seems a little... lacking. 3mm by 1mm pine. I am not sure how this is going to hold up, but I am willing to see. As an electric version, I have more hope then a mega zoom launch from a high start. I know it is meant to be limited to a 4kg pull or there abouts, but, things happen.

The wood selection throughout was superior. I was very impressed at the quality and lightness of the wood. A lot of time was spent on wood selection. However, I wish they would have spent more time in the manufacturing stage. This is my biggest complaint. The laser cutting was horrible. It was very clear that there was no quality control process in place to check how the laser was cutting. Best guess would be the laser focus was not checked throughout the process and was not adjusted for different material thicknesses. Those 17 parts on the vertical and rudder? Gaps at almost every joint big enough for me to worry and enough slop that the parts would not fit together properly. It was a straight forward fix if you have been building for a while, but for someone that might not have some more experience, it might pose as a problem. I simply filled the joints with quick CA when they were filled with sanding dust when I was shaping / smoothing the assemblies. It took a couple rounds of sanding and glueing, but it came out better then it would have been without this step. And the added weight on the rudder of all things. As a side note, I did use thinned wood glue, Titebond III to be exact, where ever possible. I think it gives a better joint, even if it does take a little longer to set up.

All that said... I am happy with the build and I am very much looking forward to flying it. It is very aesthetically pleasing to me. Moreso then some of the other offerings that are readily available. (I am not sure I want to wait 6 months for a Baba Gaga, SLite or PuRES). Would I build another one? Probably not. FRESH, Mad-RES, X-RES or the RES-Dart in that order if I were to build another 2m RES-F3B plane.
